As you may be aware, Georgia is approaching a significant milestone in 2024 with the upcoming elections, which marks a complete transition to a parliamentary model of the Georgian government. In addition, the successful integration of Georgia into European structures is closely linked to adherence to democratic principles during the upcoming elections. It is imperative that the electoral process reflects the values and standards upheld by the international community, further strengthening Georgia's path towards European integration.
The conduct of democratic elections and the establishment of a democratic nation inherently necessitate the absence of political prisoners, a trend that has regrettably emerged in Georgia. Addressing this issue is pivotal to upholding the principles of democracy and fostering a climate conducive to the nation's democratic development.
At present, a prominent political figure and leader of the opposition that is aligned with western values, former President Mikheil Saakashvili, is imprisoned. The European Committee for the Prevention of Torture (CPT) has released a report that, from our perspective, unequivocally demonstrates instances of inhumane treatment toward the former president.
The release of political prisoners is envisioned as a measure to mitigate polarization within Georgia and foster an environment conducive to fair and inclusive elections. Such actions are crucial for advancing Georgia's alignment with the broader European community.
On January 24, 2024, a collective assembly of Georgian citizens, experts spanning diverse fields, public figures, non-governmental organizations, and professionals, convened to submit an appeal to the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, the President of Ukraine, and the Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights, urging the initiation of an investigation into the previously mentioned instances of inhumane treatment and torture concerning Mikheil Saakashvili. At this assembly, we initiated the collection of public signatures, including those from various professionals, in support of the aforementioned appeal.
For this purpose, we respectfully request that, through the political and diplomatic channels available to you, you convey to the government of Georgia, led by Mr. Bidzina Ivanishvili, that the presence of political prisoners and the principles of democracy are incompatible. Regrettably, there have been instances of the current government employing prohibited methods, such as televised threats directed at President Salome Zurabishvili, who holds the potential to facilitate the resolution of the issue at hand.

ვთანხმდებით, რომ საქართველოს მესამე პრეზიდენტი არის პოლიტიკური პატიმარი და ის უპირობოდ უნდა გათავისუფლდეს.
გთხოვთ მიმართოთ უკრაინის პროკურატურას დაიწყონ გამოძიება და გამოვლინდეს მიხეილ სააკაშვილის მიმართ ჩადენილ დანაშაულში მონაწილე ყველა პირი.
